Inspiring the Next Generation - Careers and Apprenticeship Days

Comserv are active in our community working alongside the schools and colleges within our area. We offer Work Experience Placements, which can lead to students joining us as Apprentices. We work with the local schools to inspire the next generation with the careers that we offer. In support of these activities, one of our Human Resources Advisors has trained as a Skillstree Ambassador.

The role of a Skillstree Ambassador - preparing young people for working life

EBP South, is a local charity with over 20 years’ experience providing work-related learning for young people across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, and the surrounding areas. EBP South have a volunteering programme called the Skillstree Ambassadors. They are volunteers who help prepare young people for working life. This can include providing mock interviews and delivering interview preparation sessions.

The primary aim of the Skillstree Ambassadors is to help upskill young people with the soft skills required for workplaces alongside employability skills. Volunteers can give back to their local school/colleges or a school/college in Hampshire.

The Ambassadors can choose to volunteer as a way to simply give back, or as part of their volunteer days. Comserv sponsor our Skillstree Ambassador for the time they spend at these events.

Our Skillstree Ambassador offers support at careers and Apprenticeship events organised through EBP South and directly with local colleges and schools. Some events are virtual and can be supported by logging on from their computer in the office.

After volunteering at these events, EBP South issue our Skillstree Ambassador with a Skillstree Certificate and digital badges which can be used by us.

Careers events we regularly support

Get Inspired Portsmouth is a one day skills fair for students aged 11-16 years that takes place at Portsmouth Guildhall. It’s a unique careers fair where companies showcase opportunities via hands on interactive activities to help inspire students about their future careers and the different sectors that are available in the Portsmouth area.

Virtual Events have become increasingly popular since the pandemic and some events have continued in this format. Havant Academy offer a Virtual Employer Interviews Day to their Year 10 Students. Our Skillstree Ambassador holds a virtual 10 minute interview with each student, and then provides verbal and written feedback on their performance.

Park Community is one of the closest schools to our head office in Havant along with Havant Academy. Park Community offer a Career Inspiration Super Day to their Year 9 students. This day is made up of a number of activities which include business speed networking, introduction to employable me, workshops on decision making, labour market information and teamwork. Our Skillstree Ambassador will attend in person working with the students throughout the day.

Park Community also offer their Year 7 students a Careers Inspiration Event called ‘Who Dunne It!’ This is a fun challenge that gives students the chance to test and show some of the skills and qualities they’ve learnt during Year 7. For example communication, team work, resilience or problem solving. By testing these skills and qualities this helps to prepare them for the rest of their school years and working life.

EBP South and Fareham Academy arrange Apprenticeships Evenings that we support. These events are very successful and the feedback from those that attend is always positive:

Of a recent event one parent and student said:

“It is great to see so many different apprenticeship opportunities here today. Had we not come we wouldn’t have known about any of these. It’s been really informative and as a parent of a current Year 11 it has shown me the opportunities that are actually out there and that it’s not just college on offer. Thank you to all the exhibitors”.

Fareham Academy also arrange a Business Speed Networking event for their Year 10 students. This day is designed to help inspire students about the range of career options and pathways open to them after finishing school. By taking part in the Business Speed Networking sessions we hope to support the students to raise their aspirations and show them the broad range of career opportunities locally and nationally.

Our support is not restricted to specific schools or events. Our Skillstree Ambassador has also helped out at other school teaching/training sessions at local schools and colleges including Crookhorn College, Warblington School, and Horndean Technology College.
