Case Study - Girls and Boys Nursery Warren Park

Social Value updates to kitchen

PCC Resident Engagement Officer Becky Collins, reached out to us seeking assistance in with works to the kitchen at Warren Park Girls and Boys Nursery in Leigh Park. In addition to being used by the nursery, this building is going to be used as another Resident Hub in the future where they plan to open a Café to serve food and beverages, and hold Resident Participation Groups such as one pot cooking. The kitchen in its current state was not suitable for this purpose.

One of our Supervisors went along to scope the job and we agreed we would carry out the works in mid-January free of charge, as part of our Social Value work. We arranged to carry out the repairs required to update the kitchen reconfiguring the layout to optimise the available space. We began with our Purchasing Manager sourcing a matching work top and white wall tiles from Wickes (who had already gifted two lengths of worktops and some tiles) plus we purchased tile grout and adhesive, paint and all other materials.

Our team of Operatives were on-site for a week and began by removing the old worktops, tiles and sink, and then retiled, grouted and sealed the area. One of our Multitrade Operatives cut out and attached the plumbing for hot, cold and waste pipes to a new sink which we also supplied.

We then cut out and fitted a new induction hob (which had also been gifted to the organisation), and fitted the new worktops. Finally we replaced the old melamine shelves with some more stylish fixtures and finished off by decorating the kitchen walls.

We managed to create a more functional and aesthetically pleasing space from a small, outdated kitchen. The reconfigured layout created a more efficient workspace, allowing for easier movement and better utilisation of the available space. Our work has breathed new life into the space, and the updated kitchen now serves as a more inviting and functional hub offering food and drinks, and PCC can begin to host regular groups for local residents.

Becky Collins, Resident Engagement Officer for Leigh Park said:

"I am so excited to get my Community Cuppa group started, and I’m looking forward to meeting our tenants and starting some new groups with them. Comserv have completed a great job with the kitchen area, and I’m looking forward to being served coffee and cake.”

Mark Wiseman, Site Manager for Warren Park Girls and Boys Nursery said:

“I just want to pass on a huge thanks from Girls and Boys Warren Hub for the fantastic work that's been done to brighten up and refresh our Café Kitchen.

The Team from Comserv spent a week with us and transformed the tired kitchen into a fresh space to provide snacks and beverages for the Community, This work would have been out of reach for us to get completed in the short space of time. Gavin the Comserv Supervisor allowed us to have members of his team to complete the work, Dave on general Building and structural works, Barry and his team on Electrics and Kev with the final touch on the paint work. None of this would have been possible without Becky Collins and her fantastic team that coordinated this from the start.

Getting this Kitchen Café up and running at the Warren Hub will enable the Girls and Boys Nursery to provide a meeting Hub for the community which will give local residents far and wide from the Warren/Leigh Park area a place for connections to information and support. The Warren area often gets forgotten in the structure of the Havant area so this Hub will form a branch to help support local people to live a better life. Becky Collins and the team already have some great ideas which will be starting early in March 2024.

Thank you once again to all involved, it means a great deal to us at Girls and Boys.”
