Bradley Grant is an Electrician Apprentice with Comserv. He began his Apprenticeship for an Electrical Installation NVQ level 3 with Comserv in 2018 and completed it in Spring 2022.
What made you want to be an Electrician?
In 2018, I was travelling round Australia as a labourer. After that experience and when I came back to UK, I thought it would be a good idea to get a trade.
Why did you choose the construction industry?
I knew I wasn’t going to go to University. I learn better with a hands-on approach rather than sitting in a classroom constantly. The lifestyle of being a tradie also appealed to me. Working alongside other lads and having a laugh.
How did you get your placement at Comserv?
My Girlfriend’s Uncle used to work for Comserv, and he advised me that they were constantly taking on Apprentices and encouraged me to submit my CV.
Why did you choose this apprenticeship and what other options were you considering when you made your decision?
I initially applied for a Plumbing Apprenticeship at Comserv but when I interviewed, I was told there was also an Electrician Apprenticeship available, so I had a choice. I’m very happy with the choice I made.
Aside from the practical skills/techniques you learned what are some of the social skills you’ve learned?
I have much more confidence within myself to talk to different people. I have also learnt to be better at timekeeping and how to be more organised on jobs especially since I’ve been out on my own.
You received the keys to your own Comserv van in November 2020, how did that feel?
It felt great that James (my manager) had the confidence in me to give me that responsibility of going out to jobs on my own.
How has your working relationship with the other Operatives been as an Apprentice?
Brilliant, I’ve had no problems. All of the electricians are very supportive and always took time to show me how things work and explain stuff fully to me so I could learn from them and understand better.
Are there any members of staff who have particularly helped you?
Sam, Connor, and Kevin who are all part of the electrical team
What has been the most rewarding thing about working for Comserv?
My personal progress in electrical work has been very rewarding. Three years ago I would have had no idea about what I do now. As I’m nearing the end of my Apprenticeship and I’ve nearly passed all my exams, I have a good and thorough understanding.
Would you recommend an apprenticeship to a school leaver or someone who is considering a career change?
Yes definitely. I believe Comserv is a good company to do an Apprenticeship at because you’re given enough time to complete your jobs correctly, and there’s always support from the supervisors, your manager and the other Operatives.
Would you like to help train new apprentices?
Very much so. In fact, I have already taken Ryan another Electrician Apprentice with me on a few jobs.
Where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I’d love to start up my own business.
