Baffins Pantry – Social Value Project with Portsmouth HIVE
Baffins Pantry opened in December 2022 in St Cuthbert’s Church in Portsmouth. However the Pantry needed to relocate at short notice in July 2023. Thankfully, new premises were swiftly found on Tangier Road, but the unit needed some works. Fortunately, Comserv had a meeting scheduled with Portsmouth HIVE to discuss potential social value projects. As we had helped with the setup of Paulsgrove Pantry, Portsmouth HIVE asked if we could help with this project.

The Pantry had accessibility issues for those with mobility issues with two steps to get into the tiny shop. These members were having to wait at the doorway whilst staff called out what was available and shopped for them.
In addition, the landlord of the property had been good by installing bathroom facilities at very short notice, but the room was just basic unfinished plasterboard.
One of our Supervisors (Mark Arnold) went along to see how we could help. Ideally a ramp was needed but the size required would be so large it would encroach on the pavement too much, so alternative options were explored. We agreed with the Pantry staff that we would remove the two steps and replace them with one larger step and two hand rails. Mark also looked at the bathroom facilities and agreed that we would finish off the bare plasterboard to create a proper bathroom.
Comserv Get to Work
Two of our Operatives set to work on removing the original two steps and replacing them with a deeper single step making it easier for Mum’s with prams and buggies to enter the shop. The handrails were installed which offer support to those who are unsteady on their feet entering and exiting the shop.

Once the exterior works were complete, we sent along a Carpenter (Paul Foster) and a Decorator (Luke Breeze). Paul fitted a new door to the bathroom, and then Luke undercoated, filled and finally painted the toilet.

What is a Pantry?
Food Pantries are not food banks and anyone who lives in the catchment area can join. They do not require a referral from the DWP or local council, but offer a way to access a weekly shop for as little as £4 a week. Members visit the pantry and choose what they would like to purchase as part of their shop just like you would in a small convenience store. The Baffins Pantry has 150 members.
